Scottish Fold Grooming: A Practical Weekly Routine

Scottish Folds are moderate-grooming cats. Shorthairs need one weekly session; Highland Folds need two or three. The folded ears require slightly more attention than upright-eared breeds. This routine takes ten minutes a week and prevents nearly every common Fold-specific issue.

Weekly coat routine (shorthaired Fold)

One session, ten minutes. Rubber curry brush across the body in the direction of the coat, then a soft-bristle brush to distribute skin oils. During spring and fall shed, add a second midweek session.

Twice-weekly routine (Highland Fold / longhair)

Slicker brush to prevent mats, particularly under the arms and behind the ears. Metal comb through the ruff. Weekly nail trim.

Ear cleaning: the Fold-specific step

Every two weeks: gently lift the ear flap, inspect the visible outer canal under bright light. If clean (pale pink, no discharge), leave it. If waxy, moisten a cotton pad with veterinary ear cleanser and wipe the visible surface only. Never insert a cotton swab into the canal.

When to see the vet about ears

Redness, dark or black discharge, foul odor, head shaking, or excessive scratching. These are signs of infection or mites, both easily treated when caught early.

Nail trimming

Every three weeks. Trim only the clear tip; avoid the pink quick. Reward with a treat after each paw.

Bathing

Rarely necessary. Scottish Folds are fastidious self-groomers. Bathe only when soiled or for a show. Use a gentle feline shampoo, rinse thoroughly, towel-dry in a warm room.

Dental care

Weekly tooth brushing with feline enzymatic toothpaste, starting from kittenhood. Prevents nearly all periodontal disease and adds years of comfort.
