Scottish Fold Health: An Honest Breeder's Guide

Scottish Folds carry a real, well-documented genetic vulnerability. They can also live long, active, comfortable lives — if they are bred ethically and monitored appropriately. This guide is written by a breeder who has spent twelve years working with a feline orthopedic specialist on this exact question.

Osteochondrodysplasia (SFOCD): the breed's defining condition

SFOCD is a genetic cartilage-development condition caused by the same dominant gene (Fd) that produces the folded ear. Every Fold carries at least one copy of Fd. The severity is dose-dependent.

Why Fold × Fold breeding is unethical

Homozygous kittens (Fd/Fd) develop severe skeletal deformity, chronic pain, and impaired mobility. Every reputable registry and every ethical breeder prohibits Fold × Fold pairings. Aurelian Folds pairs exclusively Fold × Scottish Straight, producing only heterozygous (Fd/fd) kittens.

Heterozygous Folds and long-term outcomes

Fd/fd kittens from a Fold × Straight pairing have markedly reduced expression. Most live full, active lives. A subset develop mild joint changes visible on radiograph but not clinically significant. A smaller subset benefit from lifelong joint support (glucosamine, omega-3, weight management).

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)

HCM is the most common feline heart disease across breeds. It is not Fold-specific, but responsible breeders screen for it. Aurelian breeding cats receive annual cardiac ultrasound by a board-certified cardiologist.

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD)

A hereditary condition traditionally associated with Persians, but present at low frequency in Scottish Folds due to historic outcrossing. DNA-testable and eliminable within a generation. Aurelian breeding cats are PKD1-DNA negative.

What to demand from any breeder

Radiograph reports on both parents. HCM ultrasound reports (within the last 12 months). PKD1 DNA test results. A signed contract prohibiting Fold × Fold pairings in the buyer's household. A written health guarantee of at least two years.

Ongoing owner-side care

Weight management. Annual radiographs after age three. Daily joint support supplement from six months. A soft environment: ramps, low perches, no requirement to jump repeatedly from height.

Lifespan

A well-bred, well-cared-for Scottish Fold from a Fold × Straight pairing lives 12 to 15 years. Aurelian placements have reached 17.
